Before you hire
Clarity upfront prevents change orders and budget overruns.
- Define must-haves vs nice-to-haves
- Set budget with 10–20% contingency
- Collect inspiration and measure your space
- Check HOA rules if applicable
Before demo day
Confirm orders, permits, and logistics.
- Permits pulled where required
- Appliance model numbers confirmed
- Temporary kitchen and dining plan
- Clear access path for materials
During construction
Stay engaged without micromanaging daily tasks.
- Weekly progress check-ins
- Document change orders in writing
- Photograph hidden work before cover-up
- Keep punch list as work completes
Before anyone measures for cabinets
Know where the range vents, where the fridge water lands, and whether the floor is level enough for a tall pantry. Photograph every wall, the attic above, and the basement below the kitchen. Those photos settle arguments after drywall.
- Measure window and door casings that cabinets must clear
- Decide trash, recycling, and a landing space for groceries
- If you are keeping a wall oven, confirm the new cabinet can take the cutout
The week before demo
Pack the room, confirm dumpster placement, and have appliance model numbers on the shop drawing. Tell neighbors about noise. Box the “we might reuse this pendant” pile so it does not get tossed. Confirm the temporary cooking plan is actually set up.
- Cap or lock off gas only with a licensed plumber
- Have the toilet and a fridge on a working circuit outside the dust zone
- Walk the punch-list standard with the GC — what “done” means for caulk and hardware
