What actually changes between two and three panes
An extra pane and gas fill lowers heat flow (U-factor) and usually improves sound control. It also adds weight, which matters for large sliders and older frames that were not designed for it.

Triple pane is a climate and noise decision
In a mild climate with little street noise, the extra glass is often a poor payback next to air sealing and a decent double-pane low-e unit. On a busy arterial or a northern heating load, triple pane can be the comfort upgrade that actually shows up in the room. Do not buy it because a brochure said “best.”
